fflick is an online company that has a website by the same name. fflick has created a rating/review system using twitter API. It uses machine learning algorithms to do a semantic analysis of the comments posted by the twitter users. Based on the semantic analysis, the movie rating is created.
But why is Google interested in fflick?? Is it getting into the movie business? No, fflick adds to the core competency of google. Google had used web crawlers and algoritms to design a page ranking system that has been working very well. With a semantic analysis, you can easily analyse the real time data created by users in the a social network to get a better hold of the market trends, product trends. It is not about the movie - fflick is just a proof of concept. Google can easily use fflick's technology to scale the technology for any product.
Producing a meaningful information from all the clutter in a social network - now that is something. Google would do the same not only in a social network but the internet as a whole by embedding it with its existing algorithms to make its search better.
You can also use this technology to get a read on the market and provide valuable information about any product - Yeah basically semantic based data mining - I am pretty sure it will be highly sought after for any company instead of waiting for the sales department get some feed back on a product. A market report at the end of the day for each product! Now the valuation of Twitter in Billions also makes sense. Doesn't it?
